Abstract
Background: Congenital hypothyroidism cause impaired cognitive development and anxiety. Moringa leaves boost breastmilk and it stimulate memory development and reduce anxiety. Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the effects of giving Moringa leaf decoction to mother rats during lactation on TSH and fT4 levels, spatial memory and anxiety levels in congenital hypothyroid rats. Methods: The methods of this study is experimental post test and controlled group design. Subjects were normal and congenital hypothyroid rats obtained from Sprague Dawley rats whose drinks mixed with 0.0015% PTU started on 6th day of pregnancy until weaned. Subjects divided into 4 groups, namely normal, normal with moringa, congenital hypothyroidism, and congenital hypothyroidism with moringa. Each group consisted of 8 rats. Giving Moringa leaf decoction to mother rats at a dose of 2,16 ml/200 gramBW/day begins on day 4 after giving birth until weaned. Open Field Test conducted when pups were 33 days old and Morris Water Maze conducted since 35 days old. Measurement of TSH and Ft4 levels using the Elisa method. Results: Giving Moringa leaf decoction significantly reduce fT4 levels in normal group (p<0,05), memory retention time percentage significantly increased in congenital hypothyroid rats with Moringa (p<0,05) in Morris Water Maze test, the number of rearing and crossing significantly increased in normal rats with Moringa (p<0,05) in Open Field Test. Conclusion: The effect of giving Moringa leaf decoction are reduce fT4 levels in normal rats but doesn’t make fT4 levels worse in congenital hypothyroid rats, it increase memory retention time percentage in congenital hypothyroid rats on spatial memory
