Abstract
Background: A total of 11.3% of children under five suffer from malnutrition (Center for Nutrition Studies, 2017) One of the causes of malnutrition in children under five in Indonesia is due to inappropriate breastfeeding (Haryono R., 2014). 6 months can increase the incidence of mortality and malnutrition (Setyowireni and Surjono, 2007). The frequency, technique of giving, and duration of breastfeeding are associated with an increase in body weight for infants aged 1 - 6 months (Sari et al., 2017). Meanwhile, the frequency of giving, the technique of giving and the duration of breastfeeding are thought to be risk factors for malnutrition (Widyastuti, n.d.).Methods: This study was conducted using analytic observational theory using case control research design on malnourished children under five at Puskesmas Mlati 1, Puskesmas Godean 1, Puskesmas Moyudan, Puskesmas Minggir, and Puskesmas Belik. Results: There were 192 research participants, with 96 children with malnutrition and 96 children with normal nutrition. The correlation between the duration of breastfeeding and malnutrition, the sig value obtained was 0.043 (p <0.05). In the relationship between breastfeeding and malnutrition, the sig value obtained was 0.602 (p> 0.05), while in the relationship between the frequency of breastfeeding and malnutrition, the sig value obtained was 0.002 (p <0.05).Conclusion: This shows that there is a relationship in the duration and frequency of breastfeeding with the incidence of malnutrition and there is no relationship between the way of breastfeeding and the incidence of malnutrition.
