Abstract
There are some types of teaching materials that can be used by teachers in EFL classroom, and one of them is authentic material. Authentic material is considered to be interesting teaching material since it shows real-life situation. This research aimed to investigate the teachers’ perceptions on the use of authentic material in EFL classroom and criteria that teachers applied in selecting suitable authentic material for EFL students. This research used descriptive qualitative research design. The participants of this study were four EFL teachers in English Language Education Department. In addition, the observation and interview were employed to collect the data. This research was conducted at English Education Department in a private university in Yogyakarta. The finding revealed that the teachers have positive attitudes in using authentic materials in teaching EFL students. Using authentic materials as teaching material were beneficial. The finding showed that the authentic materials provided real world language use to the students, motivated students to engage in learning, gave cultural information and authentic materials were being widely available to be accessed as material for EFL students. The finding also revealed criteria that be implemented by the teachers in selecting authentic materials were students’ level proficiency, the topic, and the content.
