Abstract

Vocabulary is one the most significant aspects of learning English. With a limited vocabulary, someone will also own a limited comprehension in terms of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. This research aims to investigate students’ motivation in learning English, to know students’ vocabulary mastery, and to find out the correlation between vocabulary mastery and English learning motivation at English Language Education Department in one private university in Yogyakarta. This research used quantitative method with correlational research design. Two instruments were used for the research, namely vocabulary test to find out students’ vocabulary mastery and questionnaire to find out students’ learning motivation. This research was conducted at English Language Education Department (ELED) in a private university in Yogyakarta. The population of the ELED students from batch 2018 was 225. Moreover, the participants of this research were 144 students. The data were analyzed with Pearson product moment in SPSS (Statistical Product and Service Solution). Afterwards, there are three results obtained from this research. First, students’ vocabulary mastery was categorized as high in category with the result of 62.03 out of 100. The second result mentioned students’ motivation level which was 2.77 out of 4.00 indicating a high category motivation. The last result was about the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and English learning motivation that showed 0.014 < 0.05 indicating a correlation between vocabulary mastery and students’ motivation; thus, the alternative hypothesis was considered as acceptable.
