Abstract

This paper will explain why the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is proposing amendments to Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution. Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution, as it is well known, introduces new concepts into the Japanese Constitution, which must underpin all Japanese decision-making to other countries. The new Constitution finally made Japan a passive country in international relations, resulting in varieties of reactions to the Japanese Constitution, particularly article 9, from domestic Japan, particularly political parties. The LDP is one of the few Japanese parties that consistently wish to modify the Japanese Constitution, even though the amendment process is extremely difficult owing to internal LDP disagreements. The LDP's goal was further bolstered when Shinzo Abe was re-elected Prime Minister of Japan and produced a Constitutional change proposal with the LDP. As a result, the purpose of this research is to determine why the LDP proposed revisions to Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution during the Shinzo Abe administration (2012–2020).
