Abstract
Background: Balance disorders are a severe problem with increasing age in the elderly. One of the causes of decreased balance is decreased muscle strength, especially in the back and leg muscles. One of the exercises that can increase the power of the back muscles, leg muscles and dynamic balance is physical exercise in the form of core stability exercise. This study aimed to analyze the effect of core stability exercise to increase back muscle strength, leg muscles, and dynamic balance in the elderly. Methods: This study used a Quasy experiment design with a pre-post approach with a control group design with a total sample of 56 respondents who were divided into two groups. The intervention group of 28 respondents was given core stability exercise 2x a week for four weeks, while 28 respondents in the control group were observed without being given core stability exercise. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling, and the data analysis test used Ttest and Mann-Whitney test. Results: Analysis before and after the intervention there was a significant increase in all groups p-value 0.001 (<0.005), but in the intervention group there was a greater increase. The different tests between the intervention group and the control group obtained a p-value of 0.000, which means that there is an effect of core stability exercise to increase the strength of the back muscles, leg muscles and dynamic balance in the elderly. Conclusion: This study proves that core stability exercise effectively increases back muscle strength, leg muscles and dynamic balance in the elderly. Suggestion: Further research is needed on the long-term benefits of core stability exercise to increase muscle strength and dynamic balance in the elderly.
