Abstract
Background: Open fracture is an emergency case that needs to be treated immediately. The incidence of fractures reached 5.5% of the total injury cases in Indonesia in 2018. There is no treatment given for open fractures that aim to accelerate the bone healing process. The conventional method used has limitations such as pain, immune reactions, and the risk of infection. To overcome these limitations, materials that are bioactive, biocompatible, and biodegradable are needed that can be obtained from nature. Shrimp shells that generally only become waste contain chitosan which can be used to accelerate the bone healing process. This study aims to determine the effect of Vannameishrimp shell extract on the bone healing process in open fractures. Methods: Experimental posttest-only control group was conducted in 3 groups, namely control, oral, and topical with a total of 18 male white rats Wistar strain (Rattus norvegicus) 60 days old and weighed 150-200 grams. Rats induced type III open fracture of the tibia. Data were taken on the 7th, 14th, and 28th days which were then observed histologically. Data analysis used the Kruskal-Wallis comparison test. Results: The results of the Kruskal-Wallis comparison analysis test showed a statistically insignificant relationship in the three groups with a p-value = 0.190 (p>0.05). however, the histological picture shows differences in the fracture healing process. The mean score of the highest healing quality in the topical group was 3.33. Conclusion: Vannamei shrimp shell extract (Litopenaeus vannamei) had no statistical effect on the healing process of open fractures in male white rats of Wistar strain (Rattus norvegicus)
