Abstract
Background: The death rate from non-communicable diseases is still very high, especially in Indonesia. The most common cause of death in non-communicable diseases is the presence of risk factors for hypertension. Hypertension is influenced by various factors including socioeconomic status and public knowledge. This knowledge is very useful for health literacy skills in finding information related to hypertension. However, in Indonesia itself, it is still rare for people to understand the meaning of health literacy, so that it will have an impact on the high prevalence of hypertension sufferers. Therefore, this study aims to assess the relationship between the socio-economic status of the community with the level of health literacy and the level of knowledge about hypertensive heart disease. Methods: This study used a cross sectional method with the variables used was socioeconomic status as the independent variable and the dependent variables were the level of health literacy and the level of knowledge about hypertensive heart disease. The instruments used were a socioeconomic status questionnaire, a HLS-EU 16 questionnaire and a knowledge questionnaire about hypertensive heart disease. The sample in this study was 45 respondents who were PROLANIS participants at the Kasihan 1 Health Center. Results: This study showed a significant relationship between the level of social economic status and the level of health literacy (p= 0.022, r= 0.341), while the relationship between social economic status and the level of knowledge about hypertensive heart disease also showed significant results (p= 0.026, r= 0.332). Conclusion: The socio-economic level in the community will greatly affect the community's ability to seek health information as well as the influence of public knowledge about health. Therefore, health service facilities and individual health workers need to provide a lot of education to the community so that public knowledge becomes better
