Abstract
Background Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood sugar levels because the body does not make enough or becomes resistant to the hormone insulin. Diabetes mellitus is also known as The Silent Killer because it affects all organs, causing various diseases. According to the World Health Organization (2016), in 2014, approximately 422 million people in the world over the age of 18 had diabetes mellitus. The number of people worldwide with diabetes has increased between 1980 and 2014 from 108 million to 422 million, quadruple of it. The high number of type 2 diabetes mellitus cases is caused by risk factors such as gender, smoking habits, alcohol consumption, consumption of drinks that contain lots of sugar, unhealthy lifestyles, stress, lack of sleep, economic status, and food consumption that can cause obesity. One way to reduce type 2 diabetes mellitus is to do nutritional therapy or a diabetes mellitus diet to avoid various complications of diabetes mellitus associated with death. Methods This research used a cross-sectional study design. This research conducted interviews using a food recall form and medical record data to see the patient's blood sugar levels before breakfast, lunch and dinner. This research used the purposive sampling technique. The sample of this research was 39 respondents. This research was conducted from June to July 2021. The data results were analyzed by chi-square & T-test statistical tests. Results The results showed that most of the respondents were 44-58 years old (56.4%), female sex was more dominant (53.8%). The results collected on energy intake, carbohydrates, protein and fat were not significant with p>0.05, respectively 0.096, 0.302, 0.133, 0.563. In contrast, the T-test results showed a significant difference between the average blood sugar levels of patients with sufficient energy intake and less with a p-value of 0.023. However, no significant difference was found between patients' average blood sugar levels with carbohydrate, protein and fat intake with insufficient and insufficient intake with p>0.05, respectively 0.748, 0.381, 0.621. Conclusion This research showed no relationship between energy, carbohydrate, fat and protein intake on the blood sugar levels of hospitalized patients at PKU Muhammadiyah Gamping Hospital.
