Abstract
Figs fruit (Ficus carica L.) contains metabolites of polyphenols, saponins, flavonoids and quercetin are thought have an effect in lowering total blood cholesterol levels. This study aims to determine whether the administration of fig fruit ethanol extract has an effect on reducing total cholesterol levels of Wistar rats induced by lard and quail egg yolk. This study used 28 male white rats which were divided into 7 treatment groups, each group consisted of 4 tails. Group I was normal control, group II was basic control (CMC Na 0,5%), group III was negative control (high fat diet). Positive control group IV (simvastatin 10 mg), groups V, VI, VII were each given a dose of fig fruit ethanol extract of 50 mg/kgBB, 100 mg/kgBB, 150 mg/kgBB orally for 14 consecutive days. Total cholesterol levels were measured using spectrophotometry UV-Vis with CHOD-PAP cholesterol reagent (DIASYS®) on days 0, 14 and 28. The data obtained were analyzed using nonparametric Wilcoxon and Kruskal Wallis statistical tests followed by the Mann Whitney test to see differences between groups. Based on the results of statistical analysis showed that the ethanol extract of fig fruit was not significantly different from simvastatin (p>0.05) in reducing total cholesterol level in rats. Fig fruit extract dose of 100 mg/kgBB was lower than the dose of 50 mg/kgBB and was not significantly different with sig=0,248. Fig fruit extract dose of 100 mg/kgBB also decreased stronger than 150 mg/kgBB in reducing total cholesterol levels in rats with sig=0,654. The conclusion of this study is ethanol extract of figs fruit can reduce total cholesterol levels in rats with an effective dose of 100 mg/kgBB.
