Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus is one of the diseases that has the highest morbidity rate in the world, which is 9.3%, and is expected to continue to increase. The use of anti-diabetic drug therapy still causes many side effects, so alternative therapies are needed that have minimal side effects. One that can be used as an innovation for this therapy is the banana pseudostem. Banana pseudostem has potential as an anti-diabetic because it has hypoglycemic potential and has a high and varied antioxidant content. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the extract from the banana pseudostem (Musa paradisiaca L. Var. Balbisiana colla) against diabetes mellitus therapy by observing malondialdehyde (MDA) levels.
Methods: This study is an experimental study with post-test only with control group design conducted on male rats (Rattus novergicus) Sprague dawley strain aged ± 8 weeks with a total of 24 rats divided into 4 treatment groups metformin for positive control, distilled water for negative control, and the extract of the banana pseudostem (Musa paradisiaca L. Var. Balbisiana colla) doses of 200 mg/kgBW and 250 mg/kgBW as treatment groups. The rats were induced by STZ-NA so that they developed diabetes and then were given treatment according to the groups for 14 days. The rat liver was then taken to measure MDA levels by the TBARS method. Data analysis used the One Way Anova comparison test.
Results: The results showed significant differences in GDP in all treatment groups p = 0.046 (p < 0 xss=removed> 0.05).
Conclusion: Extract of banana pseudostem (Musa paradisiaca L. Var. Balbisiana colla) was effective in reducing GDP levels of rats but had no effect on MDA levels in the liver of male white rats (Rattus novergicus) Sprague dawley strain induced by STZ-NA.
