Abstract
Background: Exclusive breastfeeding is defined as feeding infant with only breast milk for the child's first six months without additional liquids, such as formula milk, orange juice, honey, tea, water, and without other solids such as bananas, papayas, milk porridge, biscuits, and steamed rice. Infants who were not given breast milk are more likely to develop infections than those who were given breast milk. Infants and toddlers who suffered from repeated infections are more likely to have malnutrition. Almost 90% of deaths in children under five years old happened in developing countries, and more than 40% of these happened due to diarrhea and ARI, diseases that can be prevented by exclusive breastfeeding.
Methods: This research used retrospective study to discover the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and ARI in children aged 6-24 months. This research was done in the Wirobrajan village from July 2021 to August 2021. The results collected from the questionnaires were analyzed by univariate analysis to discover the distribution of samples such as age and gender. In contrast, the bivariate test had been used to test the normality of the data, before the data were tested using the chi-square statistics and lambda coefficients.
Result: The research of the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding history and ARI in children aged 6 to 24 months in the Wirobrajan Village showed significant results with 0.030 as the value. Hence, it can be concluded that there is a relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and ARI in children aged 6 to 24 months.
Conclusion: This research showed that children who had history of exclusive breastfeeding have a lower risk of ARI than children who had no history of exclusive breastfeeding.
