Abstract

A study showed that Belimbing Wuluh (Averrhoa bilimbi Linn.) contain ascorbic acid, niacin, riboflavin and beta carotene that has a role as antioxidant. The antioxidant is needed to protect the body against the free radical. Level plasma of malondialdehyde (MDA) increased because the accumulation of free radical caused by carbon tetrachloride (CC14) induced. The aim of this study was to determine the capability of Belimbing Wuluh (Averrhoa bilimbi Linn.) as hepatoprotective agent. This study used pre test post test control group design. Ten male Wistar rats with 225,1 ± 10,17 gram of body weight were divided into two groups. Measuring of MDA plasma before treating was taken to determine first level plasma of MDA. Group 1 as a control group was given 1 ml aquadest orally for 12 days. Group II as experiment group was treated with 125mg/kgBW/day Belimbing Wuluh (Averrhoa bilimbi Linn.) juice for 12 days. In the 13th day, both of groups were induced by ml/kg body weight carbon tetrachloride intraperitoneally. Twenty four hours later, measuring level plasma of MDA was done. The result showed that the increase rate of MDA plasma level on control group was 522,735 % while the experiment group was 211,093 %. Statistic test of independent t-test indicated that there was significant difference on percentage of increasing MDA plasma level in both group with p=0.000 (p<0.05), it concluded that Belimbing Wuluh (Averrhoa bilimbi Linn.) juice has a capability as hepatoprotective agent and its showed that there's a significant decrease of MDA between control and experiment group.
