Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that caused hospitalization and death. Based on WHO, Indonesia was the 4th first country with diabetic patients. Because the disease affects all aspects of human physiological, seek treatment through complementary therapy has become a strategy used by patients with diabetes. The objective of this study was to analyze the use of complementary therapies by patients with DM at Dr. Sardjito Hospital Yogyakarta. This study used mixed methods combining quantitative and qualitative research methods. The samples in this study were 62 respondents by using purposive sampling. The data were collected through questionare and in depth interview by using semi structure interview guideline. The data was analyzed by using descriptive statistic and thematic analysis for qualitative result. The common complementary therapies used by the patients was herbal (27.4%), dietary supplements and vitamins (27.4%), and "dzikir" or prayer (22.6%). "Pare" (Mamordica charantia), propolis, mangosteen's skin (Garcinia mangostana L) were the most comon herbal used by the respondents. Most respondents (54.8%) did not disclose and discuss the use of complementary therapies to their nurses and doctors. The motivation and reason of respondents in using complementary therapies were the desire to get health, intention to try the therapy, and information from friends and advertisements. In the conclusion, complementary therapy is commonly practiced by the patients with dabetes mellitus in Dr. Sardjito Hospital Yogyakarta. Nurses need to understand the adventage and disadventage of complementary therapy and assess the usage of complementary therapy among diabetic patients. Further research is needed to test the effectiveness of complementary therapy practiced by the patients by using physiological and biochemical marker such as blood glucose.
