Abstract

Pulpitis is an inflammation of the dental pulp that causes pain. Dental pulpitis is treated with surgical techniques such as pulp devitalization. The pulp devitalization material has several side effects. Research from Lana Labibah and Sahrani (2021) showed that a paste of a combination of jatropha gum and red betel leaf as an alternative material for pulp devitalization, is capable of being a nerve-killing and anti-inflammatory agent with the disadvantage of having a color that changes quickly, so it is necessary to make a more stable formulation. This study aims to reformulate the pasta base with the right formula and then perform a physical test and paste stability test in the form of a centrifugation test. The method used was reformulating the paste base using zinc oxide with concentrations of 10%, 15% and 20% respectively, cassava starch (Manihot utilisima Pohl), propyl paraben, methyl paraben and vaseline. Red betel leaf extract (Piper crocatum) was obtained from the maceration process using 70% ethanol (1:3). The sap of Jatropha (Jatropha curcas L.) was obtained fresh. Phytochemical screening was carried out to identify tannins and saponins in Jatropha sap. The paste preparations were made using the melting and mixing method geometrically, and physical tests were carried out including organoleptic tests, homogeneity, pH, adhesion, dispersibility, viscosity and stability tests in the form of centrifugation tests. The phytochemical screening test showed that jatropha curcas (Jatropha curcas L.) sap contains saponins and tannins. The results of the study concluded that the optimal concentration of zinc oxide was 10%. The concentration of zinc oxide affects the physical test results of the paste, the higher the concentration of zinc oxide the higher the stickiness of the paste FI=9.36 minutes, FII=9.83 minutes, FIII=9.86 minutes, and the viscosity is FI=5.770 cp, FII= 3.840 cp and FIII=16,130 cp, but the lower the pH of the paste FI=7.02, FII=7.05 and FIII=6.99 and the spreadability of paste FI=2.22 cm, FII 2.10 cm, FIII=1 ,98 cm. The three formulas had a stable color based on the organoleptic test, which was brown, semi-solid in shape and had a characteristic smell of jatropha gum, while for the homogeneity test and centrifugation the three formulas were declared to be inhomogeneous and phase separation occurred.
