Abstract
Background: Periodontal disease is a common disease. Periodontitis is a periodontal disease caused by the presence of dental plaque. Accumulated dental plaque contains bacteria. Bacteria that play a role in periodontitis such as Fusobacterium nucleatum bacteria. The use of sappan wood is believed to have antibacterial benefits because it contains active compounds such as flavonoids, tannins and brazilin. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial power of secang wood extract (Caesalpinia sappan L.) against Fusobacterium nucleatum bacteria. Methods: This research is an experimental research. The treatment group consisted of 80%, 60%, 40%, 20% of secang wood extract, positive control and negative control aquades on Fusobacterium nucleatum bacteria using disc diffusion method. Results: The results of this study showed that secang wood extract was able to inhibit Fusobacterium nucleatum bacteria. Conclusion: Secang wood extract has antibacterial activity against Fusobacterium nucleatum bacteria.
