Abstract
This research aims to (1) describe the management of character education in the pre-Covid-19 pandemic at SMA Muhammadiyah Boarding School (MBS Senior High School) Pleret Bantul. (2) To analyze the management of character education during the Covid-19 pandemic at SMA Muhammadiyah Boarding School Pleret Bantul. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving 8 informants as the research subject, namely: school director, deputy director, dormitory administrators, guardians of students and students. The data collection techniques in this research were in-depth interview, observation and documentation. Meanwhile, the technical analysis was done using data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The findings show that: (1) The obstacles faced by the teachers and dormitory administrators in the character education during the Covid-19 pandemic include: (a) the internet coverage becomes a fundamental obstacle because some of the students' residences are in the areas where it is difficult to access a good and stable internet connection, (b) the lack of communication among the parents and dormitory administrators and teachers, (c) the effectiveness of character education, (d) the limited human resources, and (e) the students 2) The management of character education is carried out by planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating; (a) the planning for character education before the Covid-19 pandemic at the SMA Muhammadiyah Boarding School Pleret is carried out in two stages, namely the determination of goals and the preparation of the program. Meanwhile, during the Covid-19 pandemic, it is carried out in two stages and online in accordance with a decree from Central Leadership (PP) Muhammadiyah No. 08/EDR/1.0/F/ 2020 regarding the learning/lectures of Muhammadiyah Business Charity (AUM) in the education field in the emergency condition of Covid-19 and the circular letter of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 4 of 2020; (b) the organizing stage is by relied on the decree of the director of MBS Pleret; (c) The implementation of character education before and during the Covid-19 pandemic is carried out in two forms, namely the integration into daily activities such as five daily prayers, and behaving politely and providing good examples. Meanwhile, the integration into the school program includes the tahfidz program (Quran memorization), cleaning the dormitory, communal Quran recitation and face-toface speech training. The online implementation of the character education during the Covid-19 pandemic includes the same program; (d) the evaluation of character education online and offline is from the observation and exam results given by the teachers and dormitory administrators. In summary, the character education management during the Covid-19 pandemic is done using the POAC component (planning, organizing, actuating, controlling / evaluating) which manages the character education well.
