Abstract
Sugar is one of many commodity which designated by World Trade
Organization as special commodity. It is due to the consideration that sugar is one
of basic necessities as it is also a strategic food commodity other than rice. From
the 1930s to 1940s, Indonesia was the largest sugar exporting country in the world
as also being an agricultural country. However, ever since 1967, Indonesia has
become the largest sugar importing country in the world. The researcher aims to
understand the impact of the independent variables, namely, sugar production,
world sugar prices, gross domestic product (GDP), exchange rates, and Indonesian
population towards the dependent variable, that is sugar imports, both in short term
and long term. This study uses secondary data in the form of panel data in which it
is a combination of cross-country data within a 21 years period. Using the Error
Correction Model (ECM), this analysis will show a results of both short and long
term estimates. The results from this study concludes that the world sugar price
have a significant and negative effect towards Indonesia’s sugar import in a short
term period.
