Abstract

Capsicum frutescens and Capsicum annuum var. longum contain a chemical compound namely capsaicin which gives the pepper taste in chili. This compound has function as antibacterial and antifungal. Bactery which is used in this research is Streptococcus mutans which is involved in viridan alpha-haemolytic bactery and considered has high responsibility in caries dental processing. The aim of this research is to know the influence of effectivity of Capsicum frutescens extract and Capsicum annuum var. longum extract toward the growth of Streptococcus mutans. This research design is experimental laboratory in vitro by well diffusion method. The research was conducted on cultured Streptococcus mutans in agar media which is given Capsicum frutescens extract and Capsicum annuum var. longum extract in various concentration by 0% (aquadest control), 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80%. Streptococcus mutans, that is obtained from Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Gajah Mada University, was diluted then smeared on agar media. The agar media was divided into four sectors and each sector contains one well. The wells were made from a sterile pipe hole punch. Each well has a diameter of 5 mm and a depth of 3 mm. Every single agar media contains extract in certain concentration. Aquadest is used as a control. By using a sterile pipette, each well is filled by Capsicum frutescens extract and Capsicum annuum var. longum extract. Then, it is incubated in 37° C for 24 hours. Bacterial potency was measured by sliding caliper with 0,05 mm accuracy. Then the data obtained were analyzed by Twoway-ANOVA and LSD0,05 test. The result of Twoway-ANOVA shows that both Capsicum frutescens extract and Capsicum annuum var. longum extract can significantly inhibit the growth of Streptococcus mutans, where the value of p = 0,000 (p<0,05). Based on the research results, it can be concluded that Capsicum frutescens extract is more effective than Capsicum annuum var. longum extract in inhibiting the growth of Streptococcus mutans.
