Abstract
Abstract
Student-centered learning is a new learning approach used in teaching and
learning pedagogy replacing teacher-centered learning. The term student-centered
learning is widely used in the teaching and learning literatures as an alternative
Icarning approach. Student-centered learning approach usually used in the higher
education. As an alternative learning approach, there are some difficulties that
may be faced by the students. Nevertheless, the researcher interested in exploring
the students' perception about how they defined student-centered learning and the
impact of student-centered learning for students” learning process.
This research aims to know students” perception on student-centered
learning implemented at the English Education Department (EED) of Universitas
Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) and to find out the impacts that students
perceive from student-centered learning method. The data were obtained from five
students of EED of UMY batch 2013. The researcher used an interview to collect
the data. Then, in analyzing the data the researcher used coding. The result
showed that students have positive perceptions on the student-centered learning
implemented at the EED of UMY. Moreover, there are some impacts that students
perceive from student-centered learning. All of the participants in this research
mentioned that the implementation of student-centered learning could increase
students” social communication that they can be more active in learning process,
become cooperative with others and gain their self-confidence. Student-centered
learning also increase students' self-esteem that they can be more autonomous in

impacts that the students perceive from student-centered learning is that student-
centered learning increase students' proficiency.
