Abstract

Abstract Assessment has an important role in the field of education. Formative assessment is often used by almost all teachers or lecturers. Formative assessment is conducted during the ongoing learning process and is used to provide feedback to the students for improving the learning process. According to the researcher's experience and observation, many students can improve their learning ability by doing formative assessment. This study is conducted to obtain the students' perception on the implementation of formative assessment at English Language Education Department of a private university in Yogyakarta. This study used four students of English Language Education Department of a private university in Yogyakarta batch 2014 as participants. In addition, individual interview was used as a data collection method to find out various opinions of students regarding their perception of formative assessment. The first finding of the study reveals that there are several kinds of formative assessment implemented at a private university in Yogyakarta such as essay, role-play, vocabulary quiz, group discussion, oral presentation, and debate. The second finding states that formative assessment has several benefits for the student including informing students of their weaknesses, improving students' knowledge, enriching their vocabularies, to improving speaking skill, and motivating the students to learn. The third finding this study identifies the negative impacts that students' get from formative assessment, such as the assessment consuming too much time, the students getting bored, and the pressure. The findings of this study will become important findings regarding students' perception about formative assessment.
