Abstract Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia that occurs due to abnormal secretion of insulin, abnormality function of insulin or both. Complications of diabetes can occur at all levels of anatomical and cellular level. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is one of the chronic complications of diabetes most feared because influence quality of life and social function of patients. From several studies have found that diabetes mellitus patients develop platelet dysfunction. The aim of this study is to determine the relation betwen platelet count with incident of PAD in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. This research is observational analytic with design of case control studies using medical record. Subjects of the study were patients with type 2 of diabetes mellitus with and without the complications of PAD is treated at PKU Muhammadiyah hospital Yogyakarta between the years 2008-2009 and qualifying inclusion and exclusion criteria. Then performed randomized to determine the subjects. Parametric data were analyzed with independent T test and correlation analysis using Spearman correlation test. There were 9 people in the case group and 18 people in the control group, most subject were female. The result of independent sample t test for platelet count in the two groups showed a value of p=0,045. The calculation of the Pearson correlation test showed p=0,045 and coefficient= 0,388. In this study we can conclude that there are differences in platelet count between case group and control group, which in the case group platelet count higher than the control group. The increasing of platelet count was associated with incident of PAD in type 2 diabetes mellitus patient.
