Abstract

At al-Islam Congress in Circbon (1922), Muhammadiyah accused of attacking established schools (traditionalist-conservative) and building a new school outside the existing four, established schools. Muhammadiyah also accused of aiming to provide a new interpretation of the qur'an which according to the orthodox (traditional) is a forbidden act. So, what is actually the teaching and understanding of the qur'an by KHA Dahlan which is called as the new interpretation by the orthodox? This research will answer the question. This research is done by tracking the existing documents annd books, especially from two of KHA Dahlan's students notes., RH Hadjid who put his emphasis on teaching and HM Syuja' who put more emphasis on KHA Dahlan's biography. From this searching, KHA Dahlan looks very dynamic in teaching practice and understanding the qur'an, including the teaching of Islamic religion. Unlike other scholars at that time, he put an emphasis on the practice of what is in the qur'an instead of only knowing and have the understanding just as do the scholars of his day. Some conclusions are obtained in this research. First, KHA Dahlan used progressive teaching methods. It means that he did not depend on only one method alone. He did not hesitate to replace his method to another method for a successful teaching. He believed that a teaching should be held until the students were able to practice according to the message of the knowledge. Second, the teaching did not stop at only reading and memorizing but to understand and practice it in real life. Therefore, he did not hesitate to repeat the lesson many times until his students understand what to do and practice it. Third, his interpretation of the qur'an preceded by careful thought. Therefore, his interpretation on the verses chosen is the solution to the problems occured at that time. Fourth, his understanding of the qur'an was not only in theory but also in practice. Therefore, in addition to practice his understanding in everyday life, he did not get bored to encourage it to others, especially his students.
