Abstract

This research is aimed at identifying 1) Autonomy of Islamic boarding school students (santri) in Pabelan Islamic Boarding School. 2) Counseling paradigm of Islamic boarding school teachers (kiai) in improving the autonomy of students in Pabelan Islamic Boarding School, Muntilan, Central Java.
This research is qualitative naturalistic research. Data of the research are collected through observation, interview, as well as documentation and analyzed by using interactive analysis model, namely collecting, presenting, reducing data and deducing.
Research finding shows that l) Formation of students' personality leading to the autonomy is to a greater extent derived from non formal education in the sense of one which covers student's daily activities in the dormitory. Dynamism of students' activities in Pabelan Islamic Boarding School noticeably encourages the formation of students' autonomy both physically and emotionally. Physical autonomy begins with the growth of students' ability to do self help which is then followed by the increase of self support psychologically. 2) Counseling paradigm of Islamic Boarding School teachers (kiai) in promoting students' autonomy is called democratic counseling in which the teachers follow and appreciate students' privilege yet restrict it since it is accompanied by control and guidance consciously between parties of both teacher and student. Students' opinions and wants will be followed and fulfilled if they are in agreement with either teachers' norms or boarding school principle but if not they will be restricted.
