Abstract

INDONESIA IS A HOME TO MORE THAN 300,000 SPECIES OF ANIMAL. UNFORTUNATELY, MANY OF THEM ARE SUBJECTED TO ILLEGAL TRADING. TO DATE INDONESIA IS CONFRONTING A POTENTIALLY MASSIVE LOSS OF PROTECTED FAUNA DUE TO EXCESSIVE ILLEGAL TRADING. IN 2017 TO 2019, THERE WERE APPROXIMATELY 15.610 OF ILLEGAL WILDLIFE TRADE CASES. URGENT ACTION TO END ILLEGAL POACHING AND TRADING OF FAUNA IN INDONESIA SHOULD BE ENSURED BY THE GOVERNMENT, AS IT IS INSTRUCTED BY THE UNITED NATION THROUGH SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGS) 2030 AGENDA. THIS STUDY EXAMINES THE INDONESIAN LAW IN DEALING WITH THE ISSUE OF CONTROLLING PROTECTED ANIMAL TRADING FOR ENSURING THE SDGS IN INDONESIA. THE METHOD USED IN THIS STUDY IS NORMATIVE LEGAL RESEARCH BY USING STATUTORY AND CASE APPROACHES. THE SECONDARY DATA ARE COLLECTED THROUGH ONLINE AND OFFLINE LIBRARY RESEARCH. THE SELECTED MATERIALS ARE ANALYSED THROUGH DESCRIPTIVE AND QUALITATIVE ANALYSES. THE RESULT OF THIS RESEARCH SHOWS THAT THE ENFORCEMENT OF LAW IS STILL INEFFECTIVE, SPECIFICALLY IN TERMS OF PUNISHMENT AND MONITORING BY THE GOVERNMENT REGARDING THE ISSUE. ACCORDINGLY, THE GOVERNMENT IS SUGGESTED TO ENFORCE THE LAW REGARDING THIS ISSUE RIGOROUSLY AND TO STRENGTHEN THE LEGISLATION IN PROMOTING SDGS AND HALTING ILLEGAL TRADING OF PROTECTED ANIMAL IN INDONESIA.
