Abstract
In tourism, communication must become the priority to connect the tour guide and the tourist, especially the foreign tourist. One of the ways to enhance the communication is by joining English training course. This research is aimed to find out the motivational factor and the difficulties that the residents of the tourism in Bangunkerto tourism village have when it comes to learning English language. This research used descriptive qualitative as the research design. This research was conducted at Bangunkerto tourism village, in 2022. The participants were six residents of the tourism village in Yogyakarta. The criteria to be a participant must be a member of tourism village, must be at least guide a foreign tourist, have joined the English language training course, and willing to be interviewed. The instrument that used by the researcher in this research is in-depth interview. Based on the findings of this research, the participants motivations are: communicate using English language fluently, fulfilling the job demands, get a good position on the job, learn more about English language, get more income, improve the service for the tourists, get recognition from other, and wider connection, while the difficulties are: lack of grammar knowledge, lack of vocabulary, unsupportive environment where one can be invited to practice English, teachers’ teaching methods, inadequate facilities and infrastructure, forgetting to say a word or sentence, doubt when they want to speak out the word or sentences.
