Abstract

Amid this pandemic, every situation and activity are changed fromoffline to online, as the example teaching and learning. The differences between online andoffline learning can affect students’ motivation. Therefore, This this study has twoobjectives, namely identifying the differences between the students’ motivationinjoining online and offline learning and exploring the aspects that can motivate the students to engage in online learning. This research used the descriptive qualitative. The study collected the data from six participants at an Islamic university in Yogyakarta. The technique for data collection was the interview. Thefindings revealed that online learning was the learning system using digital platform and offline learning is the learning system using face-to-face activities, the students had the lack of motivation in online learning, and they had a good motivation in offline learning. On the other hand, the students had problems in online learning, such as lack of internet connection and lack of interaction between teacher and the students. Thus, they preferred to offline learning than online learning. In addition, regarding the students’ perception, to motivate the students in online learning, the students should focus on and reach their goals of learning; teacher should more improve their creativity in online class, and the students needed the support system to avoid boredom while joining online learning.
