Abstract
In teaching and learning process, there are several methods usually used by teachers or lecturers one of which is problem-based learning (PBL). Therefore, this research aimed to know the lecturers’ challenges and perception about the effectiveness of using PBL in teaching and learning especially teaching English. This research used qualitative research approach. In order, to collect the data researcher interviewed three participants. Those three participants were lecturer in English Language Education Department in one of private university at Yogyakarta who has experience in implementing PBL in their teaching. The findings of this research were according to the interviews were challenges faced by lecturers such as challenges concerning to students, teacher centeredness, challenges in finding suitable learning material for students, and challenges in applying group discussion. Besides, there also findings about lecturers’ perception about the effectiveness of PBL such as, increasing students’ motivation and critical thinking in learning, helping lecturers to understand students’ characteristic, and helping lecturers to understand how to design a good learning material.
