Abstract

The Communicative Language Teaching method is a method used to improve students' abilities and skills to be more communicative in learning. This research was conducted to find out what activities teachers usually use in teaching using the CLT method. This study also wants to know the obstacles experienced by teachers in teaching using the CLT method in the language learning process. This research used qualitative approach to collect the data. The data were collected from five teacher overall population at public high school in Yogyakarta. This study also used interview protocol as the research instrument. The Interview consisted of five items used to know that activities when apply CLT method in the classroom and two items that were used to know obstacle apply CLT in the classroom. Then, the data were analyzed using transcribing, coding, and memberchecking. The result showed that there are five activities which can the teacher apply CLT in the classroom, that is discussion, roleplay, storytelling, presentation, and works in pairs. There are five obstacle apply CLT in the classroom that are, lack of student activity, lack of mastery, pronunciation, and understanding of language, lack of motivation and self-confidence, difficulity in monitoring the class.
