Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, education should move from traditional classrooms to online learning. When learning online, students have difficulties in learning listening online, and the lecturers should also make suitable strategies for teaching listening. This research aims to analyze the cause of students’ difficulties when learning listening online, and to analyze the strategies used by teacher when teaching listening during COVID-19 pandemic in an Islamic private university. This research used descriptive qualitative design and used interview to gather the data. The participants of this research are three students and three lecturers from English Education Department. The findings of this research showed that the causes of students’ difficulties in learning listening online are divided into two factors. The first is external factors, and the following of internal factors are poor internet connection, inadequate device, and unsupportive learning environment. The second is internal factors, the following of internal factors are language proficiency and lack of motivation. In addition, the suitable strategies used by teachers when teaching listening online are using audio and video as teaching media, giving students a lot of listening exposure, measuring students listening ability, using platforms for teaching listening, and using Top-down and Bottom-up strategies.
