Abstract

Teachers must find a suitable assessment to obtain the information relevant to students’ progress. Teachers must use their language assessment literacy to choose and design the assessment to build strong writing knowledge, but some of them encountered problems because of their low language assessment literacy. The study proposed investigating the teachers' techniques in assessing writing for high school learners and how to design them. A qualitative approach using document analysis and interviews as data collection method was applied. The four English high school teachers in Yogyakarta participated in this study. The study discovered that the techniques used are writing exercises, jumbled exercises, multiple-choice questions, and cloze tests. Also, the participants put more consideration into designing the assessment by considering the objectives, time allocation, and students' characteristics.
