Abstract
English is one of the subjects taught to students with special needs including to students with hearing impairments. As they have limited hearing, the English teachers are required to have special skills and strategies in teaching them. This study aimed to investigate the teachers’ perception on the importance of learning English to students with hearing impairments and their strategies for teaching English to students with hearing impairments. This study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive qualitative research design. The researcher interviewed two English teachers from a School for Students with Special Needs in Cilacap, Central Java as the participants. The results showed that according to the teachers’ point of view, it is important for students with hearing impairment to learn English so that they can adapt with the current era and can communicate with foreigners. In addition, the findings showed six strategies used by the teachers to teach English to students with hearing impairment. The strategies are using translation, using repetition, using visual materials, using demonstration, using lip-reading, and using gadgets and technology support.
