Abstract
English learners must have a learning method that can enhance their learning, in this case, prior studies found that reflection is one of the most effective ones. However, every learning method has its own advantage and disadvantage. This study aims to find out the students’ perceptions on the advantage and also problems of using reflection in learning English. This research uses qualitative research approach. The research took place in an English Language Education Department (ELED) of a private university in Yogyakarta. There are four participants in this research, taken from batch 2018 of the ELED. The researcher conducted interviews to collect the data. The data was coded and analysed to create the findings. The findings show that there are six advantages and four problems of using reflection in learning English as perceived by the students. The advantages are encouraging the students to put their own perspective, enabling the students to combine personal experience and theories, developing students’ creative thinking, enhancing students’ motivation in learning, engaging the students in classroom activities, improving students’ achievements. Meanwhile, the problems are time consuming, lack of reflective understanding process, confusion in selecting the experience to reflect upon, hard to recall memories towards some events.
