Abstract

A two-phase flow is part of a multi-phase flow that is distinguished over the phases of the flow (gas-liquid, liquid-solid, and solid-gas). The phenomenon of twophase flow is often found in the world of health, namely in the circulation of blood in the human body and in the industrial world such as condensers, and piping systems. A two-phase flow is part of a multi-phase flow that is distinguished over the phases of the flow (gas-liquid, liquid-solid, and solid-gas). The phenomenon of two-phase flow is often found in the world of health, namely in the circulation of blood in the human body and the industrial world such as condensers, and piping systems. It is very important to know in this application what kind of flow can cause a significant increase in pressure. This will damage the piping system or cause death if it occurs in human blood vessels. The flow pattern is strongly influenced by the void fraction, so it is important to research to determine the characteristics of the void fraction value in the two-phase flow pattern of air-a solution of sodium chloride and glucose in capillary pipes with a slope of 75o to horizontal. This void fraction research uses a mixture of gaseous fluids used in the form of dry air and liquid fluids in the form of a mixture of two solutions, namely NaCl 90%, glucose 10%, and a mixture of 95% NaCl solution, 5% glucose. This experiment was performed at the superficial speed of the gas (JG) = 0.083 m/s – 74.604 m/s and the superficial speed of the liquid (JL) = 0.041 m/s – 4.145 m/s. This study used an image processing method consisting of image reading, image replacement, color reversal, image adjustment, and filteing with the MATLAB R2014a application program.. The results showed that in the bubbly flow pattern, the void fraction value occurred a difference between the two solutions because at a certain time span there was an increase due to the appearance of a plug flow pattern. The churn flow pattern shows a fluctuating void fraction value due to distortions that occur in the test section. The greater the superficial speed of the gas, the value of the void fraction obtained is large, if the greater the superficial speed of water, the value of the void fraction will decrease. On the difference in the concentration of liquid does not significantly affect the void fraction and flow pattern. In previous studies, there were similarities in the observed flow patterns. In addition, there are differences in transition lines in the flow pattern. The physical properties of liquids (viscosity and surface tension) that have a great influence on flow patterns and void fractions.
