Abstract

This research aims to find out the instillation of tolerance values in families of different religious, the implementation of tolerance in families of different religion in Islamic education, and the factors that support and hinder the instillation of tolerance values in families of different religions in Brajan village, Kasihan sub-district, Bantul regency. The main research questions of this research are: (1) How are the values of tolerance in families of different religions instilled? (2) How is the tolerance of families of different religions in Islamic education implemented, and (3) What are the factors that support and hinder the instillation of tolerance values in families of different religions in Brajan village, Kasihan sub-district, Bantul regency. This field research was done using qualitative descriptive approach. The data collection technique was carried out using interviews, observations, and documentation. The research findings show that (1) The instillation of the tolerance values in families of different religions is done by realizing that each member is free to choose the religion they believe in as long as; it brings no conflict between family members, it is not coercion, always prioritizes peace and tranquility, gives freedom to choose the religion according to their conscience, places parents as a guide for the children, provides an understanding to always respect and appreciate the differences in their religions. (2) The implementation of instilling the tolerance in families of different religions in Islamic education is done through: the aqidah/moral education by instilling monotheism, instilling faith, teaching Islamic education, birrul walidain, and good character to the children. The aqidah/moral education in children is done by teaching them good manners of socialization, politeness, simplicity, and habit to stay away from bad deeds. Meanwhile, the prayer education is done through performing 5-time prayers, reading the holy Quran, attending communal Islamic study/recitation at Quran Learning Center (Taman Pendidikan Al-Quran /TPA), participating in religious activities, reading surah Yasin, and implementing Islamic laws. (3) The supporting factors in instilling the values of tolerance in families of different religions are: religious awareness of an individual, social history, respect for diversity, and government support in building religious life. Meanwhile, the factors that hinder the instillation of tolerance values in families of different religions are: fanaticism, and narrow thinking or lack of religious knowledge.
