Abstract
POLYMETHYL METHACRYLATE (PMMA) IS A POLYMER MATRIX COMMONLY USED FOR DENTURE MATERIALS. HOWEVER, IT HAS THE DISADVANTAGE OF LOW IMPACT STRENGTH, SO IT NEEDS THE ADDITION OF REINFORCEMENT MATERIALS. SISAL FIBER IS ONE OF THE NATURAL FIBERS THAT CAN POTENTIALLY BE DEVELOPED AS A REINFORCEMENT MATERIAL FOR ARTIFICIAL TEETH BECAUSE IT CAN EFFECTIVELY SUPPRESS MICROBIAL GROWTH. IN ADDITION, THE USE OF PARTICLES AS REINFORCEMENT MATERIALS THAT HAVE BEEN USED INCLUDE CHITOSAN MICRO AND NANOPARTICLES. THIS STUDY AIMS TO CHARACTERIZE THE EFFECT OF THE ADDITION OF MICROCRYSTALLINE CELLULOSE (MCC) ON THE MECHANICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF SISAL/MCC/PMMA HYBRID COMPOSITE AS A DENTURE MATERIAL. THIS STUDY USED SISAL FIBERS ALKALIZED WITH 6 PERSEN NAOH SOLUTION FOR 36 HOURS. THE LENGTH OF THE SISAL FIBER USED IS 4 MM. THE MAKING OF SISAL/MCC/PMMA HYBRID COMPOSITE IS DONE BY HAND LAY-UP METHOD USING HOT-PRESS MOLDING WITH AN EMPHASIS OF 100 KG/CM?2; UNTIL IT REACHES A TEMPERATURE OF 80?. THE VOLUME FRACTION BETWEEN MATRIX AND FILLER IS 80: 20 PERSEN , WITH A VARIATION OF MCC ADDITION BY 1, 2, 3, AND 5 PERSEN. BENDING AND IMPACT TESTING REFER TO ASTM D790 AND ASTM D6110, RESPECTIVELY. FAULT IMPACT TEST RESULTS WERE CHARACTERIZED USING A SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE (SEM). THE WATER ABSORPTION TEST REFERS TO ASTM D570. WEIGHT GAIN DATA WAS TAKEN BY MEASURING THE WEIGHT EVERY 12 HOURS FOR 216 HOURS. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT INCREASING THE VOLUME FRACTION OF MCC DECREASES THE BENDING PROPERTIES AND IMPACT STRENGTH. THE MATRIX'S VISCOSITY INCREASES AS THE MCC VOLUME FRACTION INCREASES, RESULTING IN A WEAK BOND BETWEEN THE MATRIX AND THE FILLER. WATER ABSORPTION INCREASES AS MCC PARTICLES INCREASE. HYBRID COMPOSITES WITH MCC 1 PERSEN HAVE THE HIGHEST BENDING STRENGTH AND IMPACT TOUGHNESS OF 65.90 MPA AND 17.59 KJ/M?2;, RESPECTIVELY. THIS RESULT IS THE OPTIMAL VALUE. THE RESULTS OF THIS STUDY MAY BE USEFUL INFORMATION FOR DEVELOPING COMPOSITE DENTURE MATERIALS
