Abstract

Heat exchanger is a device for exchanging heat between a hot fluid and a cold fluid. The Cepu Oil and Gas PPSDM refinery unit has five shell and tube type heat exchangers. One of them is HE-004/E-RC-004 which is fed by two types of fluids, namely residue on the shell side and crude oil on the tube side. This HE004/E-RC-004 started operating in 2003 until now and it is not documented when the last repair was done. Based on this, an analysis of HE-004/E-RC-004 was carried out in actual conditions with the efficiency value as a parameter, in order to find out if there was an error there was no need to do it. If the efficiency is less than 65% then it needs to be repaired. Calculation analysis of HE-004/E-RC-004 was carried out by two methods, namely manual calculation and HTRI software. In manual calculations, there is additional data from the previous year to compare the efficiency values. While the calculation of the HTRI software is used as a validation as well as a comparison from manual calculations. The data needed in this calculation are process data in the form of inlet and outlet temperatures, capacity, density, and specifications in the form of geometric data. From the data obtained the value of heat supply (Q), total heat transfer coefficient (U), LMTD, and efficiency (η). Based on manual calculations and software on HE-004/E-RC-004, the heat supply values obtained are 249,767.08 Btu/hour and 249,800.00 Btu/hour so that the manual calculation data is still valid because the results are relatively the same. Meanwhile, for the calculation of the efficiency value (η) in actual conditions, the efficiency value is 59.25%. Based on the efficiency value which is below the minimum limit of less than 65%, it can be concluded that HE-004/E-RC-004 needs to be done to overcome the problem.
