Abstract

Millennial is a genertion who has some different aspects with the previous generation consisting of characteristics, needs, cultures, social, and perspective on the technological development. Millennials prefer to the learning activities such as learning in groups or teams, using technology, and learning based on their experiance. There are two main objectives of this research which are to identify certain teaching strategies of the English Language Education Department teachers to teach English for millennial students. The second objective is to investigate barriers hindering the English Language Education Department teachers in teaching English for millennial students. This study was conducted at one of the Islamic private universities of Yogyakarta. The subjects of this study are four the English Language Education Department teachers who fullfil certain criteria such as graduated in Master Degree, has English teaching experience more than five years in collage, has a good educational background specially who had expert in teaching English, and adepted to conduct effective teaching strategies. This study adopted a qualitative approach using descriptive qualitative design. This study used open-ended interview for the data collection technique to obtain a complete and in-depth information. The findings of study showed that there were five teaching strategies used by English Language Education Department teachers in teaching English for millennial students including student-centered learning, team-oriented learning, technology-based learning, project-based learning, and communicative language teaching. Meanwhile, there were three barriers hindering the English Language Education Department teachers including students characteristic, technology implementation, and social changes. Keywords: Millennial students, teaching strategies, teaching barriers
