Abstract
Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) is the foreign policy of the United States to fight against the enemy through sanctions. The sanctions provided by the US are embargoed sanctions on Iran, Russia and North Korea. Meanwhile, third countries will also be subject to sanctions if they cooperate with these countries. The US has imposed penalties in the form of a ban on investment in other countries and vice versa because Russia is accused of intervening in the 2016 US General Elections and military operations in Crimea. This study focuses on the reasons for the US issuing the CAATSA policy towards Russian defense equipment trade in 2017-2020. To analyze this study, the authors use a foreign policy conceptual framework and the concept of national interest. The results of this study indicate that the US wants to maximize its economic benefits through arms trade and embargo sanctions and secure its political interests by preventing Russian security threats and enhancing US foreign political relations. In this study, the authors used qualitative methods in the form of explanative and secondary data from books, journals, articles and news.
