Abstract

Vocabulary is an important thing in learning a language. It can be learned intentionally, for example by applying some learning strategies. Also, it can be learned subconsciously, for example by doing extensive reading and extensive listening. The researcher is interested to discuss one of intentional learning, namely self-regulated learning. The purpose of this study is to examine the correlation between students’ self-regulated learning and vocabulary mastery. This research was correlational study. This research was conducted at an English Language Education Department in one of private university in Yogyakarta. The participants of this research were 133 students batch 2019. The researcher used questionnaire as data gathering method. The result showed that the students have high level of self-regulated learning with mean score of 59.5. Moreover, the result of students’ vocabulary mastery is in high level with the mean score of 41.2. The study also revealed that p-value of Pearson correlation is 0.537 which is higher than 0.05. It means that null hypothesis is accepted. It means there is no significant correlation between students’ self-regulated learning and vocabulary mastery or other words there is just small correlation. Meanwhile, the Pearson Correlation value is -0.054. It means that the small correlation is negative correlation. In conclusion, the correlation between self-regulated learning and vocabulary mastery is small negative correlation. The higher intensity of selfregulated learning applied in vocabulary learning, the lower vocabulary mastery that the students can get.
