Abstract

Stainless steel bracket is a bracket that is often used in the field of orthodontics because it has criteria that are close to ideal, but nowadays many patients are concerned with aesthetic aspects in orthodontic treatment so that ceramic brackets are starting to be introduced. Brackets can be bonded directly (direct bonding) to the tooth surface using an adhesive. One of the adhesive materials that can be used is resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC). RMGIC was created to overcome the disadvantages of composite resin moisture sensitivity and the low mechanical strength of glass ionomers. The purpose of this paper is to determine the difference in shear strength between stainless steel and ceramic brackets using resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC). To get a good adhesive strength of the bracket, a shear bond strength test can be carried out. The literature results show that the shear strength between ceramic brackets is higher than that of stainless steel brackets using resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) and is still in the safe range for use in orthodontic treatment. Based on the description above, it can be concluded that there are differences in shear strength between stainless steel brackets and ceramic brackets using resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC).
Key words: shear bond strength, stainless steel bracket, ceramic bracket, RMGIC
