Abstract
Ulcer is one of the diseases in the 10 largest diseases in Indonesia.
According to the Ministry of Health in Indonesia, the prevalence of gastritis in
Indonesia in 2014 was 40.8% or 274,396 cases out of 238,452,952 people. West
Sumatra Province is in 2nd place with a total of 285,232 cases. Ulcer disease is a
disease with a minor illness that can disappear by itself and can be cured by selfmedication. The results of the 2014 National Socio-Economic Survey showed that
the percentage of the population who underwent self-medication was 61.05%. The
insufficient level of self-medication knowledge can affect a person in doing selfmedication. The results of the 2014 National Socio-Economic Survey show that the
percentage of Indonesia's population undergoing self-medication is 61.05%. The
purpose of this study was to determine the level of self-medication knowledge of
gastric ulcers in Indonesians on the island of Sumatra.
This research was conducted in an observational descriptive with a cross
sectional approach. Thisresearch was used non probability sampling technique with
consecutive sampling method. The total number of respondents who include the
inclusion criteria was 260. Data was collected by distributing a validated
questionnaire in the form of a google form containing research explanations,
respondent data, and self-medication knowledge of ulcer disease. The questionnaire
validity test was conducted using the content validity test and the face validity test.
While the reliability test used Cronbach's Alpha with SPSS. Self-medication
knowledge data were analyzed descriptively to see the distribution of knowledge
levels.
The results showed the level of self-medication ulcer knowledge of the
Sumatran community is 71.9% of respondents were in the good category, 27.7% of
respondents were in the enough category, and 0.4% of respondents were in the poor
category. The method of storing and disposing of drugs were the two lowest
knowledge aspects from the questionnaire results (38.10% & 48.80%). It can be
concluded that the level of knowledge of ulcer disease self-medication in
Indonesians on the island of Sumatra is in the good category.
