Abstract
Film is a mass media that is quite attractive to the public, which has developed from time to time. Most films are intended as a means of entertainment, but in fact, films can also influence audiences who watch them. One of the biggest film industries today is the Hollywood film industry. There have been many films produced by Hollywood that give a negative image about Islam, but not a few also give a positive image about Islam. This is also related to the issue of the attack that occurred on September 9, 2001, otherwise known as ‘nine oneone’. This tragedy has cornered Islam, and Islam is portrayed negatively in the film world. One of the films that give a positive image after the tragedy was a film called Ali (2001). It is the film that the writer chose to examine how Muslim identity is depicted. This study used a qualitative method with a text analysis approach. The theoretical concept used in determining Muslim identity used the concept promoted by Tariq Ramadan and Ahmad Umar Hasyim. Data collection was carried out by observing the scenes in the film repeatedly with additional secondary data in the form of books, journals, andYouTube media related to this film. Data analysis was performed using Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis, which includes the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings show that there is a representation of Muslim identity that is shown in Ali film in the form of the concept of 1) faith. 2) knowledgeable, 3) good example, 4) worship, 5) work, and 6) jihad.
