Abstract
This paper will discuss the background of the shift in US foreign policy in the era of Donald Trump responding to the issue of democracy advocacy in Hong Kong during 2019. As an exceptional country, the United States has always raised the issue of democracy as one of its foreign policy orientations. This causes advocacy for democratic values to always relied on the United States to gain aspirations and support, including in the case of demonstrations pro-democracy in Hong Kong. However, the position of the United States under Donald Trump's administration in responding to this case is considered to be ambiguous because of many conflicting policy changes. This condition leads to the question of why there has been a shift in US foreign policy in the Donald Trump era in response to democracy advocacy in Hong Kong. This research will be conducted using qualitative methods with literature study data collection techniques. Using Graham T. Allison's theory of rational choice, this shift in US policy was carried out with rational considerations to secure American interests in China and Hong Kong.
