Abstract

Using orthodontic tools is necessity that is used to improve tooth malposition, chewing system, talking and aesthetic appearance. The components and materials of the orthodontic apparatus have been developed for eithers fixed orthodontic devices or the removal of the components of a divices wich can affect the normal flora in the oral cavity, one of them is Candida species. The use of fixed orthodontic appliences can hinder the cleaning process of the teeth wich can increase plaque accumulation, resulting in oral infextion, dental caries, gingival imflamation and periodontal disease. The purpose of this literature review is to see the difference in the amount of Candida in fixed and removable orthodontic devices. The result of this literature review show that using a fixed or removable orthodontic applience can increase the amount of Candida in the oral cavity, one type of Candida that is most often and widely found is Candida albicans. Consisten and regular sampling of subjects can clearly show that the increase in Candida counts can be affected by the additional applience in the oral cavity (orthodontic applience).
Keywords : Orthodontic, fixed orthodontic appliance (FOA), Removable orthodontic appliance (ROA), Oral microflora, Candida species.
