Abstract
Australia, as a country close to Indonesia, certainly has various interests. One
of them is in the interests of security. With the bombing cases in Indonesia from the
Bali Bombing I, the JW Marriot Hotel, the bombing in front of the Australian
Embassy, and the Bali Bombing 2 which killed several Australian citizens, the
Australian government did not remain silent. The formation of Special Detachment
88, which involved Australia as an effort to quell acts of terrorism, actually received a
negative image because it was mistaken for several times. It also makes Australia's
image negative in Indonesian society. With this negative image, Australia is trying to
restore its positive image in Indonesia. This is done by providing the Australia
Awards Scholarship to the Indonesian people.
The Australia Awards Scholarship is categorized as a public diplomacy effort
using soft power where the expected outcome is that it can influence Australia's
positive image in Indonesia and reduce the threat to Indonesia's security in Australia.
This scholarship, which is used as an Australian public diplomacy effort, is expected
to be able to change the way the Indonesian people view Australia. This is realized
through intermediary recipients of the Australia Awards Scholarship. Indirectly, their
perspective on Australia will be "positive" because they have been awarded
scholarships to continue their studies there. This scholarship is a form of Australian
public diplomacy towards Indonesia to get a positive image as well as to get support
from the public and the Indonesian government to reduce Indonesia's security threat
to Australia.
