Abstract
Estrogen is a reproductive hormone produced by the ovaries which has an important role in the continuity of female physiological functions. Another important function of the hormone estrogen is to regulate calcium metabolism which plays a role in the formation of the structure and strength of bones and teeth. So that deficiency in estrogen levels can trigger an imbalance of calcium in the blood. Treatment of estrogen deficiency uses phytoestrogens which can be found in tempeh flour extract which contains isoflavones, a compound with a chemical structure similar to estrogen. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between serum estrogen and Ca levels after giving soybean tempe flour extract to estrogen deficient Sprague-Dawley rats. This study used a laboratory experimental design in vivo using 15 female Sprague-Dawley rats aged 3 months which were divided into 3 groups to be given. Blood draws were carried out in all groups to calculate calcium levels and the amount of the hormone estrogen. Data analysis using the Saphiro-Wilk normality test followed by the Pearson correlation test. The results showed that there was no significant correlation between the amount of estrogen levels and the amount of calcium. Based on these results, it can be concluded that there is no significant relationship between estrogen and serum calcium levels in estrogen deficient Sprague-Dawley rats after giving soybean tempeh flour extract.
Key words: Estrogen, serum Ca, estrogen deficiency, tempeh flour extract
