Abstract
The study aimed to describe the use of problem focused coping and emotional focused coping, as well as medical student academic stress, and to reveal the effects of problem focused coping and emotional focused coping on academic stress. This research used a quantitative approach. The type of research was explanatory causal research. Sampling was done by using a simple random sampling technique. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire. Data analysis used descriptive and inferential statistics. The results of the study are: 1) The use of problem-focused coping on respondents is in the medium category with a percentage of 57%, and the use of emotional-focused coping is in the high category with a percentage of 79%, 2) the academic stress experienced by respondents is in the moderate category with a percentage of 67%, 3) Problem-focused coping partially and negatively affects academic stress in students. Based on the significant value of 0.003<0.05 and the value of T count of -3.064; 4) Emotional-focused coping partially and positively affects academic stress in students. Based on the significant value of 0.000<0.05 and the T value of 4.168; 5) Problemfocused coping and emotional-focused coping simultaneously affect academic stress in students. Based on a significance value of 0.000<0.05. The level of the effect of problem-focused coping and emotional-focused coping on academic stress in students majoring in general medicine class 2018 of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta is 17.1%, and the other influences are 82.9%. The variable emotional-focused coping has the most dominant effect with an effective contribution of 12.2% and a relative contribution of 71.3%.
