Abstract
The increase of fuel oil compsumption is not accompanied with the increase in domestic oil production. Therefore, there is shortage of fuel oil for regions in Indonesia and causing fuel price hike. Renewable energy development needs to be done to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, including the utilization of vegetable oil into biodiesel. This research used a mixture of castor oil and palm oil combined with diesel oil. This study aimed to determine the performance of diesel engines using 100% diesel fuel and biodiesel with a variation of B5, B10,B15 and B20. Tested using one-cylinder diesel engine connected to a generator to power a load of 5 lamps with each 500 watt load. The test parameters are specific fuel consumption, power and injection characteristic testing. The results obtained that biodiesel fuel B20 is lower than diesel fuel,meanwhile biodiesel B5 is higher than diesel fuel but not so significant. For fuel consumption (SFC), the biodiesel mixture of B20 is lower than diesel fuel or more efficient than diesel that is BKBJ B20 0,448 kg/kW at maximum load. In spray characteristic test obtained jatropha biodiesel fuel produces a small spary injection than solar.
