Abstract
YouTube is a multimedia that can be used to facilitate English teaching and learning. This study aimed to know the types of YouTube videos tend to be watched by the English Language Education Department students to learn English and their attitude towards the use of YouTube in English Language learning. The respondents are the 6th semester students from the English Language Education Department at one private Islamic university in Yogyakarta. The data was collected through survey using questionnaire from a total of 176 students which has been determined using cluster sampling. This study revealed that the types of YouTube videos categorized as “always” watched by the students to learn English were “Music” (Mean=3.71), “Talk Show” (Mean=3.35), and “How To” (Mean=3.28). Then, the types of YouTube videos categorized as “often” watched by the students to learn English were “Film” (Mean=3.15), “Comedy” (Mean=3.04), “Travel” (Mean=3.02), “Educational” (Mean=3.01), “News and Documentaries” (Mean=2.78), and “Science and Technology” (Mean=2.55). Next, the types of YouTube video categorized as “rarely” watched by the students to learn English were “Autos and Vehicle” (Mean=1.80), “Pet and Animal” (Mean=2.50), “Sports” (Mean=2.42), and “Gaming” (Mean=2.20). Besides, the result showed that the English Language Education Department students’ attitude was in a “positive attitude” towards the use of YouTube in English language learning (Mean=3.25). Hence, students believes that YouTube can be used as a media to learn English.
